Housing approvals show signs of recovery 8 April 2009 |
| |
| The latest February building approvals data released from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has indicated signs of recovery in most states. Western Australia posted the largest month on month growth figure of 19.9 per cent, with New South Wales shortly behind at 18.6 per cent. The remaining states had modest growth, with the exception of Queensland and the two territories registering a decline in approvals. The QLD housing market is said to suffering from affordability issues.Housing Industry Association chief executive, Chris Lamont points to the government fiscal stimulus as the key attribute in stimulating the economy. He expects that growth will remain strong up until June 30 2009, as first home owners rush in to make use of the First Home Owner's Boost.West Australian home builder JWH Group managing director Julian Walter flagged concerns about the recent spikes in first-home buyer activity levels. He said "What a lot of people don't realise is that when interest rates start going up again first-home buyers die very quickly as they've got no leeway in their borrowings." |
