Pensioners are better off this week after last week's increase in pensions and allowances and a cut in deeming rates to their lowest level in five years. The single age pension went up $7.70 a fortnight to $569.80. The couple rate went up by $6.40 each, taking the maximum partnered pension rate to $475.90 a fortnight.The utilities allowance and the seniors concession allowance, payable to self-funded retirees who qualify for the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card but don't receive the utilities allowance, has also gone up by $4.80 to $515.80.The deeming rates have been cut to three per cent and two per cent depending on the size of investments held.A non-homeowning couple can now hold more than one million investments and still receive the pension as all the assets test thresholds have been lifted.
