Suncorp told the stock exchange yesterday that it had received a number of approaches from interested parties wishing to purchase its banking and wealth management operations. ANZ is believed to have been negotiating with Suncorp for about one month to try and organise a friendly merger. The Commonwealth Bank has already placed a bid on the table and could be the favourite as analysts expect CBA to able to pay more for Suncorp's banking assets than any other bank. Suncorp, like St George Bank, has been hit hard by the credit crunch because it has a lower single A credit rating, making funding more expensive than its AA rated big bank competitors.
