Aussie banks to shrug off Greek crisis 11 May 2010
Australian banks will be relatively unaffected by rising wholesale funding costs flowing from the Greek debt crisis. Deutsche Bank analyst James Freeman said "The crisis has the potential to translate into increased funding costs, but given the major banks have raised more than half of their 2010 funding task, we believe the banks will be able to continue to raise wholesale funding in the international markets." Westpac still needs to raise $16bn this year and ANZ needs $8bn in funding. Westpac chief executive Gail Kelly last week warned that the bank still faced funding pressure.
