Bank and super insurance in doubt 17 September 2008
The income protection, disability and travel insurance paid for by millions of Australians through their bank and super funds is in doubt as speculation grows that giant American insurer AIG is close to collapse. NAB, ANZ, Jetstar and Diners Club all offer travel insurance products that are underwritten by AIG. Super funds REST, Health Super and Woolworths Staff Super all provide death, disability and income protection insurance underwritten by AIG. AIG Australia said it operated independently of the US parent company and had more than sufficient capital to meet all obligations. NAB said it was monitoring the situation. Health Super and REST said they had received assurances from AIG.
