ANZ chief executive Mike Smith is the highest paid of all bank executives, taking home $13 million last year, despite the bank’s share price halving in 2007-08. National Australia Bank, CEO John Stewart last year earned $8.5 million. NAB’s Australian chief executive, Ahmed Fahour, earned $7.33 million. Banks are expected to shed up to 10,000 bank staff in coming months, as they cut costs to deal with the slowing world economy.
