A senate committee yesterday rejected calls to legislate against excessively high bank penalty fees. The fees, which are charged for dishonoured cheques, late credit card payments, overdrawn accounts and exceeded credit limits have risen steadily over the last five years, although there have been some recent moves by banks to limit or remove them from some accounts. NAB and ANZ have both cut their penalty fees this month. Family First senator Steve Fielding said there was no effective competition on fees between banks and no way for a customer to negotiate fees with their bank.
