Big banks want the government to scale back the deposit guarantee to ensure that it does not become ingrained in the banking system. They want the one million dollar threshold gradually lowered and the three year limit reviewed in six months. Banks argue that smaller credit unions are offering unsustainable interest rates on deposit products because risk has been decoupled from return by the guarantee. Those institutions could experience a flight of investors out from their products when the deposit guarantee ends. Louise Petschler, CEO of Abacus, the umbrella group representing credit unions said they were run conservatively and were competing with banks on customer service.
