Now, a growing number of companies are searching out the owners of this cash and charging them big fees to reunite them with their cash – a task that consumers can do themselves for free.One of these companies, Collection Point, fell foul of the Victorian Consumer and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) when it charged an elderly pensioner more than two thousand dollars to reunite him with some lost superannuation. The fee was equal to 25 per cent (plus GST) of the total amount of recovered.Many companies are charging flat rates of around $400 to reunite consumers with their lost cash, but a few are charging exorbitant fees ranging into the thousands of the dollars.
