Competition continues to favour savers

| People who save money in online accounts or term deposits are continuing to reap the benefits of competition between banks. Malcolm Edey, assistant governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, said yesterday that the average interest rate banks have been offering on their term-deposit specials has been about 6 per cent, or 100 basis points above the bill rate.A few years ago, before the GFC, term deposits were typically at 50 basis points below the bill rate, a price swing of about 150 basis points or 1.5 per cent. While noting some conditions driving competition are likely to abate, it's unlikely the situation will completely reverse, he said. In the wake of the credit crisis, concerns remain intensified with investors continuing to focus on stable sources of funding. |
