Interest rates on some savings accounts are greater than mortgage rates for the first time in almost two decades.Competition between banks and credit unions for retail deposits is expected to intensify because the federal government’s wholesale bank funding guarantee has been axed. Major banks are offering interest rates as high as 7 per cent for three-year term deposits and 8 per cent for five-year accounts, compared with the average standard variable rate of around 6.6 per cent."Lenders are bidding up the interest rate on deposits to in excess of the cash rate in order to shore up their funding base,” RBS chief economist Kieran Davies said."Some banks are offering deposit rates that exceed the standard variable mortgage rate. The last time this happened was in the mid-1980s, but there was a ceiling on mortgage rates back then."
