Westpac and Melbourne University's Institute of Applied Economic & Social Research index of economic activity released yesterday shows economic activity grew at an annualised rate of 6.2 per cent in December, accelerating from 5.4 per cent growth in November 2009.The data continues to point to a dramatic improvement in growth prospects after hitting an extreme low of minus-6.9 per cent in May 2009, said Westpac senior economist Matthew Hassan.Economists said that the improved economic figures may lead to further rate hikes by the Reserve bank of Australia.
