At least 50 people have been tricked into disclosing their Westpac account passwords and PINs to a fake website run by a criminal gang believed to be based in Moscow. The website bombarded thousands of email accounts with a message, purportedly from the bank, bearing Westpac symbols and asked account-holders to click on a web link to complete a "quick identity check".Westpac's David Lording said "Our internet security team has started procedures to close down the website," he explained. "We are working with the Australian Federal Police's hi-tech crime unit to ensure the website is removed from the internet by international authorities." Customers worried they might have fallen victim should contact the bank or visit the AFP's service at scamwatch.gov.au.
