Credit Unions to sell bank mortgages 8 January 2009
The number of credit unions in Australia is expected to shrink further from 132 currently to as few as 50 institutions as the mutual sector consolidates to survive. Australian Central CU is currently looking to become a distributor of major bank mortgages as it struggles to maintain funding for lending. "We buy funds from major banks because we can't really access wholesale markets, so they are controlling funding for smaller players at the moment," said Australian Central managing director Peter Evers.
