Suncorp Bank's cost of borrowing looks set to rise significantly after ratings agency Standard & Poor's downgraded the bank's long term rating from A+ to A. S&P said the downgrading came about because the banking business is now apparently non-core to Suncorp Metway's business as evidenced by the company's willingness to sell the bank at the height of the global financial crisis last year. ANZ and Commonwealth both expressed interest in buying the bank, which was withdrawn from sale when the federal government's deposit guarantee was introduced. Suncorp issued a statement denying the banking business was non-core.
