The Treasury yesterday released figures on the amount of tax concessions handed out by the federal government in 2007-2008. Superannuation was the biggest beneficiary accounting for $30 billion of the total $73.7 billion in tax breaks, sparking accusations that the system was biased.John Freebairn, an economist from the University of Melbourne said "it was an incredibly inequitable system" as in some instances it provided "bigger tax breaks than investing in your home" for some individual’s on higher tax brackets.Given that the tax arrangements under the Henry tax system were unlikely to be reviewed, Freebairn said that the best method of remedying the situation was by implementing changes to the contributions tax based on each individual’s personal income-tax level.
