Research commissioned by St.George Bank into the spending and savings habits of 1,000 Australians aged 18-29 years has found that many of the Gen Ys polled admitted they do not know how to save.One in four (24%) say they have never had to budget and save, while a further 35% have only done so for a short period, when saving for a particular expense, such as a holiday. Just 36% of Gen Ys rate themselves as experienced at budgeting and saving.The research found the vast majority (87%) of Gen Y borrow and lend money among their friends and peers through an informal ‘bank’ system, with the amount changing hands estimated at more than $2.6 billion each year.
