Graduates to pay debt by community service 28 January 2009
University graduates with Higher Education Contribution Scheme debts will be able to pay down some of what they owe by working voluntarily for charities under a federal government plan that has the backing of the prime minister Kevin Rudd. The average graduate has a HECS debt of $12,000, which usually takes more than seven years to pay-off. Graduates would pay down the debt by accumulating hours of community service.
