Guarantee fails to bring bank costs down 11 December 2008
The federal government's guarantee on bank wholesale funding has failed to reduce the bank's funding costs but has allowed them to access debt on world markets again. Three big banks, Westpac, ANZ and Commonwealth have used the government's AAA rated guarantee to raise money on bond markets this week but all have had to pay a premium over September prices despite having the backing of the sovereign guarantee. The increased costs, averaging about 0.3 per cent add to the 0.7 per cent fee levied on the banks by the federal government for the use of its guarantee. Analysts said that the high costs would put pressure on bank margins and keep borrowing rates high for retail customers.
