ING Direct has become the first Australian bank to allow customers to open and operate a deposit account entirely online. The bank has done away with the need for faxing copied of identification documents, such as passports and drivers licenses, by taking advantage of new anti-money laundering laws which allow institutions to use public databases to verify identities. After completing an online application form, customer information is passed to a third party verification service called FCS Online to cross-check with databases including telephone directories and electoral rolls. "We were able to show the Government that electronic verification was robust and an alternative method to face-to-face. The legislation now says you have to conduct verification but it does not proscribe the channel," ING Direct executive director Lisa Claes said.
