Investors rush to bank deposits 1 December 2008 |
| |
| Investors continued to choose bank deposits in October over shares and other investment options. More than $11 billion was deposited in banks, credit unions and building societies, up three per cent on the previous month, in the biggest increase in deposits seen in several years, according to figures from the financial system regulator APRA. Citibank had the highest rate of growth in household deposits with 5.7 per cent increase in October. Bendigo and Adelaide Bank showed strong deposit growth at 4.8 per cent. ANZ was up 4.7 per cent, Westpac up 3.8 per cent and NAB up 2.8 per cent. The only bank to lose deposits was ING which suffered a fall in deposits of 4.3 per cent. Commonwealth Bank still holds by far the most household deposits of any institution and grew deposits during the month by 3.1 per cent. |
