The Government is expected to tighten the taper rate on the age pension tonight when it delivers the commonwealth budget for 2009/2010. The move would restrict the numbers of self funded retirees who also receive a part age pension from Centrelink.The taper rate was made more generous by Peter Costello two years ago. The taper rate changes would help fund a $30 per week rise in the base rate of pension.Other changes are expected to include a restriction on the tax breaks in superannuation and a lowering of the superannuation co-contribution scheme from $1,500 to $1,000 per $1,000 contributed.
