People who are renting homes are being caught in the cross-fire between banks and struggling mortgagee landlords. Banks are being accused of breaking tenancy laws by forcing tenants to move out when their landlord defaults on their home loan.The Tenants Union of Victoria has approached banks and other financial institutions over dozens of alleged illegal eviction notices in the past year, including many which gave tenants just two weeks to move out. Renters are given extra time to vacate once the issue is raised. Under Victorian law, renters must be given at least 28 days notice to leave a property if a landlord has defaulted.
