Australian banks are losing the battle for the hearts, minds and wallets of today’s online generation. “Young people are a huge challenge for banks,” says Dirk Hofman, Head of Provider Relations at Infochoice.“Talking like a banker to Gen Y simply doesn’t work. Now there are lots of people in banks and financial companies trying to come to grips with the new social media and how people use it so they can work out how to relate to and sell to these people.”The banks have fallen behind PayPal in the all important youth oriented category of online payments. Now Paypal has announced its’ intention to migrate out of cyberspace and into the real world.Soon the online generation may be using PayPal Eftpos cards and PayPal enabled mobile phones to buy milk and bread at their local supermarket. Or they may be using entirely new cards and payments technologies, developed the neighbourhood computer geek, based on PayPal software base code.“We are the most preferred online payment method now and it is a natural progression for PayPal to move into the physical space,” said Dinuke Ranasinghe, managing director of PayPal in Australia.
