Single aged pensioners will receive an increase of $32.49 per week, taking the base rate to a legislated benchmark level of 27.7 per cent of average weekly male earnings. The rate for couples will rise by $10.14 and carers will get a new annual $600 bonus payment under changes costing $14 billion over four years.The treasurer Wayne Swan said the increased payments would be paid for in part by changes that slow the rate of indexed increases in family tax payments and a new means test for Family Tax Benefit Part B. The family tax benefit changes are estimated to cost the average family about $2 per child per week within four years.The increased pension will also be offset by an increased retirement age of 67 years which will be phased in from 2017.
