Profitable penalty fees disappearing 4 August 2009
For every dollar a big bank takes from a customer in penalty fees, 87 cents is pure profit according to an industry analysis by Deutsche Bank. Banks raked in $960 million in penalty fees from households and $200 million from business customers during 2008 according to the Reserve Bank of Australia.Commonwealth Bank took $370 million, followed by Westpac at $300 million, then ANZ and NAB, both with $230 million. CBA and ANZ are expected to announce changes or big reductions to their penalty fees following NAB’s axing of penalty fees for retail customers and Westpac’s reduction in penalty fees across the board.
