Suncorp launched an ad campaign over the weekend for term deposits, promising to pay 25 basis points more than rates being offered by the big four banks.The fine print reveals that the offer is good for any deposits placed before December 12 but it underlines that fact that competition for deposits is still strong.Suncorp executive manager deposits, Tony Meredith, said the idea of the ads was to focus on the higher rates being offered by Suncorp because consumers often missed that point.Meredith said: “A lot of people see a rate advertised and they don’t know if it is good or bad. Some go to comparison websites but there are many who don’t.“We wanted to show them the difference. If you look at our performance we are typically 25 points above the majors. We expect to maintain that.”Meredith said a lot of money was going into 12-month terms, taking advantage of the wide margin between at-call rates and longer term deposit rates.
