Australian Banks will be watching the UK closely this week as the Royal Bank of Scotland moves towards issuing a large rights issue aimed at solving its short term cash flow problems. RBOS is expected to launch a rights issue of between £5 billion and £12 billion, or in Australian terms $11 billion and $30 billion. However should this be the case it is expected that this will not be the last rights issue with all other major UK banks poised to follow suit, as a rights issue this size would give one bank huge advantages over another. Similarly while none in Australia are in dire need of capitalisation, banks here will be closely considering the implications of a rights issue. One big difference in Australian is that the major banks have large deposit bases, the only exception being St George.
