Credit Unions, small banks talk mergers 15 October 2008
TAFE and Teachers Credit Unions are planning to merge in order to provide better services, more branches and more competitive interest rates to their 158,000 members. Credit Unions fear they will not be able to remain competitive with the big banks after the three year deposit guarantee from the federal government runs out. The Industry Superannuation fund owned Member's Equity Bank is also considering mergers with regional banks or other smaller financial institutions in order to stay competitive. A wide ranging review of Members Equity Bank's direction and strategy is now being finalised.
