ING reassures Australian depositors 20 October 2008
ING Direct said yesterday it was unaffected by problems affecting its Dutch parent bank that had forced it to take ten billion Euros from the Dutch government to boost its capital base. ING Direct sought to reassure depositors that their money was safe and guaranteed by the Australian government. ING Australia holds a separate banking license for this country, is regulated by the Australian banking regulator, APRA, and is required to hold capital reserves in Australia to support its domestic operations here. ING Australia, the wealth management joint venture between ING and ANZ also reassured Australian investors and said that it was "business as usual" in Australia. The Dutch parent bank was forced to seek government assistance after it posted a third quarter loss of 500 million Euros.
