Banks welcome government intervention 12 October 2008
Bank executives have welcomed Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's announcement yesterday to guarantee all deposits held by banks, building societies and credit unions with no cap for three years. Mr Rudd likened the current financial industry crisis to a national security event. Previously the big banks have argued that the move would unfairly advantage their smaller rivals. NAB chief executive John Stewart said the government had shown it was "right on top" of the situation. Bank of Queensland chief executive David Liddy said there had been a lot of concern from customers about the safety of their deposits. The Australian Bankers Association said the guarantee would increase confidence in the system.
