Commonwealth set to dominate the market 7 October 2008
The Commonwealth Bank could control nearly 30 per cent of the Australian banking market if it successfully bids for BankWest and Suncorp's banking operations. Westpac will control 21 per cent of the market after the merger with St George bank is complete. NAB and ANZ are also believed to be bidding for Suncorp's banking business. One senior bank executive said the deals were unlikely to be opposed by the competition regulator the ACCC, since it had already approved the Westpac/St George deal.
