Financial system regulator the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority will be empowered to take and liquidate banks and credit unions under legislation introduced to the House of Representatives yesterday by the treasurer Wayne Swan. The treasurer said the new powers would enable APRA to more seamlessly manage distressed institutions and recover funds for shareholders and depositors. JP Morgan said the banking system was still under pressure despite the government's plan to guarantee deposits and back bank debt securities.
