Lenders will be forced to be responsible 13 October 2008
The Commonwealth government will introduce a "responsible lending test" to the consumer credit code next year according to sources. Under the new rules, lenders who push debt onto borrowers who can't afford it will be heavily penalised and could lose their license to lend money. The government will also extend the code to cover mortgages over investment properties. Previously the consumer credit code, which until now has been administered by the states, covered mortgages for owner occupiers, but now a second mortgage taken out for investment purposes.
