Majors set for bidding war on BankWest 1 October 2008
It is almost inevitable that Australia's sixth largest bank will be swallowed up by one of the majors before the end of 2008. BankWest has $38 billion in deposits and has been growing its business strongly over the last few years. NAB, Commonwealth Bank and ANZ are believed to be preparing for a bidding war to buy BankWest from troubled UK banking group HBOS. HBOS was to be bought out by big British rival bank Lloyds TSB in a $25 billion deal, but that deal looks likely to collapse. That may increase the likelihood of a British government takeover of HBOS and a firesale of assets including the highly successful BankWest operations, headquartered in Perth.
