Pressure is mounting on Westpac to close the deal to buy St George Bank. The value of the offer has fallen along with Westpac's share price, from a premium over of almost 30 per cent to a discount of 3 per cent. The proposed merger between Westpac and St George Bank could add to competition in the banking industry according to the head of HSBC Bank in Australia. He said the other three big banks and regionals would try to pick up market share from the combined operation.
