Banking online has many advantages over traditional banking. The ability to pay bills online, transfer money and conduct business banking can greatly save time and reduce banking transaction fees. This is because online banking typically is associated with lower transaction fees than traditional banking.

Consider online banking savings accounts?

When your thinking about opening up a new savings account, you should consider alternative options such as online banking savings accounts These new account offerings offer higher interest rates than traditional branch-based accounts and lower fees. Their returns can also be as good as or better than fixed interest investments like term deposits and debentures.

Online transactions are cheaper!

Pay bills, check balances and transfer money between accounts using online banking. Online banking transactions are significantly cheaper over the internet than over the counter - and far more convenient.

Online banking transactions are convenient

Online banking allows you to do your banking whenever you want, not when the bank wants to open for business. Internet online banking websites offer 24-hour, 7 days a week access to pay bills, check balances and transfer money between accounts, even apply for a new account. Best of all there are no queues.

 Twelve tips to help with internet security

Online banking fraud is on the rise and there are a number of ways you can protect your credit card and bank accounts if you transact over the internet:

  1. Keep your computer secure.
  1. Don't send credit card or account details by e-mail;
  1. Reject any email that asks you to follow a link to website and input account details for verification - even if the website looks authentic, its probably a fake replica. The Banks WILL NOT ask you to do this so don’t be fooled. Masking (faking) a website is not a difficult task to undertake. If you EVER receive an email supposedly from the bank call the bank to verify. Whatever you do, don’t use the phone number on the email.
  1. Make sure you log out of your online account when finished - especially at work, libraries and net cafes. Avoid using libraries and net cafes if possible.
  1. Deal only with established and reputable merchants;
  1. Only make payments to secure websites - look for the padlock symbol in the bottom-right of your browser and click for details
  1. If using a new site, do business first in a small way;
  1. Check your accounts and report discrepancies immediately;
  1. Ignore the "remember my password option" on banking and shopping sites
  1. Change your password regularly;
  1. Cancel any card that has been used fraudulently;
  1. Read a company's privacy policy before buying online

With the ever increasing number of people using broadband as their means of internet connection, you should seriously consider purchasing a firewall to help increase your online banking security. Netgear has a number of well priced products for home use.

When conducting online banking always be smart with what you do. Online banking has many advantages over the traditional branch banking options. Time saving, cost savings can be had.
